Spider on a Stick

Gentlemen, select your Spider...

Nikki and I walked down the road a few houses to check on a cell phone being repaired for the fish cage manager. In the yard were a group of boys and men with little sticks. One had a spider on his stick and was playing with it. Then i noticed several had spiders on sticks. So I asked Nikki what was going on & she told me they were fighting the spiders and bet money on them. I had to watch -- this was something new to me. The men catch spiders and put them in home made boxes with little compartments. they choose one spider from their batch -- match it with another fighters spider by size -- make a few bets -- and the action is on. The bets were small -- but large for the wages here -- 20 peso -- about $0.38 US. Nikki says some of the bigger matches will have bets that range from 1000 peso and up. One of the men becomes pit boss and judge for the matches and they change around. It seemed that everyone was laughing and having a good time.

I never seem to find an end to new things to learn about life in the Philippines -- I have several other posts in mind of local things but really need to get the fish capture post done -- this one just could not wait though.
