James Reports November 18, 2009

OUR FIRST FULL HARVEST OF FISH

Mabuhay --this will be a different kind of post -- James is writing it from Florida instead of Nikki writing it from Digos City because Nikki's papa had a stroke and was in the hospital for several days so she has been busy running things at work, at home and at the fish farm -- there is just not enough time for her to do this post -- I have captioned some of the pictures of our first milkfish harvest -- and when Nikki finds time she will fill out the rest of the captions for us.

The harvest went well and the buyers were surprised that about 90% of our fish were of the large size--around a pound or a little larger with a few smaller fish also sold--Enting, Papa and Nikki have done a superb job growing out the fingerlings.

Out of 10,350 fish put into the pen, 9,901 fish were harvested. Of this amount there was 12,523 pounds of large fish in the 1 pound range--there was 550 pounds of fish just under this size--and 286 pounds of smaller fish harvested and sold -- plus there was another 1,100 pounds of fish harvested and distributed to family and friends in the brangay [neighborhood where Nikki lives]. Quite a haul for a first time. For our second cycle, we have had 2 more cages built. We have already (re)stocked 2 cages with fingerlings and the 3rd cage will get its fingerlings on the 28th of this month.

One thing I found out a few days ago was a real surprise to me so I wanted to mention it. The sacks that the feed come in are saved and sold. Nikki says the money from their sale will be used to buy Christmas presents for Enting and our other workers. There were 585 sacks --sold at 3.5 peso each for a total 2,047.50 peso. Nothing goes to waste in the Philippines. Great idea hun. Thank you for all you do.

By the way papa is home and doing great. Get well soon papa.
